Mentoring Changes Lives!

MENTORING Changes Lives!

Each One Save One is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering

children in our community by providing an army of volunteers throughout the metropolitan area.  We can easily see the devastation of violence, drugs, teen pregnancy and crime in our communities today.  We as individuals, businesses and corporations can act decisively to effect positive changes and offer concrete alternatives to this generation.

Metairie Bank welcomes MentorNOLA mentees

Eight Metairie Bank employees serve as volunteer mentors with Each One Save One’s mentoring program MentorNOLA. Each week they meet with their mentees at a Ella Dolhonde Elementary School, right across the street from the Main Office Branch. On May 18th, the students had an opportunity to visit their mentors at work. Metairie Bank invited MentorNOLA mentees from an amazing tour of the bank. Our students visited the board room, “banking school”, vault and more. They learned valuable banking skills and even had the opportunity to cash a check!

Daja Vigne’s Story

“I want to go back and help the Academy the same way they helped me”

Daja Vigne is like many other freshmen in college: she works hard in school, enjoys spending time with her friends and fills whatever little free time she has with sports and other extracurricular activities. However, what truly sets Daja apart is her understanding and appreciation for what helped her to get to Belhaven University.

It all started in Carrollton Park, in New Orleans, where she heard from coaches about a new facility, the New Orleans MLB Urban Youth Academy. Daja’s Mom signed her up for a few practices, but what helped make her a mainstay there were the batting cages at the Academy, both inside and out, that Daja used while playing for a softball travel team that summer.

“It was really impressive to use their facilities for the first time,” Daja said. “It was different from any other experience I had previously.”

While balancing classes, Key Club meetings and homework, Daja would always look forward to the time she was able to spend at the Academy with her teammates and coaches.

“Just playing and practicing with my team is what I miss the most,” Daja explained. “Having the ability to seek advice from Coach Eddie (Davis) helped me prepare for college and learn how to manage my time between softball and school.”

Last year, Daja was selected as the inaugural recipient of a college scholarship program developed by the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Foundation and the Jack Fielkow Scholarship Fund. She was recognized because of her loyal participation in the New Orleans MLB Urban Youth Academy’s softball program, her success in the classroom and work in the community.

“It showed that my hard work was appreciated, that I can achieve success,” Daja said proudly. “It was truly special that someone recognized what I had been working for, and now this scholarship will help me realize my dreams.”

Daja is still working hard, this time for a degree in Sports Medicine in the hopes that she can one day start her own business as a Physical Therapist. Despite her diligent work and preparation for the next stage of life, she has not forgotten about the support and guidance she received from the Urban Youth Academy and its coaches. Of all the places and activities that she can do during her school breaks, Daja has decided to return to the Academy to coach and volunteer in whatever way she can.

“I want to go back and help the Academy the same way they helped me”.

Helping to coach her baseball-obsessed nephews, Michael and Mason, is one aspect of returning to New Orleans that Daja is looking forward to.

“They always supported me at my games, so now I want to support them,” Daja explained.

With her passion, give-back mentality, and spirited vision, Daja will undoubtedly make an impact wherever life takes her.
